The Benefits of Taking a Guided Mount Rushmore Tour

Taking a Mount Rushmore Guided Tour is one way to get the most out of your visit. Guided tours can provide an in-depth look at this iconic national monument’s history and significance and offer access to areas off-limits to general park visitors.

Here are some of the key benefits that guided tours bring:

  • Expertise: A good guide has knowledge about Mount Rushmore that exceeds what’s available on the standard tourist brochures or websites – they can give you an interesting look at specific historical points related to the monument and share interesting facts not found elsewhere.

  • Accessibility: Some areas of Mount Rushmore are off-limits to the general public. Guided tours offer access to these special places, which would otherwise be unavailable in many cases.

  • Comfort: Guided tours are often conducted in air-conditioned buses or other comfortable vehicles. This means no more long hikes up the mountain on hot summer days! Instead, you’ll be able to sit back, relax, and learn about Mount Rushmore while enjoying comfort and convenience.

  • Convenience: Taking a guided tour means you don’t have to worry about getting lost or missing out on any important sites at Mount Rushmore – your guide will ensure you hit all the highlights without taking too much time.

  • Fun: A guided tour of Mount Rushmore isn’t just educational. It can also be a lot of fun! Guides often add their flair to the tour, making for an entertaining and engaging experience you won’t soon forget.

Day 1: Rapid City in South Dakota

Ready to see America’s grandest sights? Of course, you are! Day 1 sets the stage for adventure in Rapid City, South Dakota! Take the hotel bus from the airport and unpack at your hotel in the middle of the city at 3:00 p.m.

Once you’ve settled in, it’s time for the welcome briefing with Caravan at 7:00 p.m. Here’s the inside scoop: Most tours call The Rushmore Hotel home, but trips beginning on Sept. 19 and 20 get to explore the Holiday Inn Rapid City Downtown instead!

Day 2: Crazy Horse Memorial

Hey there, adventure-seeker! Ready to go on an epic journey to see some of America’s most remarkable historical monuments?

  • First stop: the iconic National Monument in Mt. Rushmore! Take a gander at the gigantic faces of Presidents Roosevelt, Lincoln, Washington, Jefferson, and Teddy.

  • Next up, we’re heading to the gigantic Crazy Horse Memorial —- It’s still being built after 50 years! Native American artisans will show off their outstanding crafts here, so make sure to check them out. Also, don’t forget to check out North America’s Indian Museum here.

  • We’ll end the day with a beautiful drive through the Black Hills. This will take us back to busy Rapid City, where you can see the historic area and statues of our past presidents that are bigger than life. Let’s go!

Day 3: Little Bighorn and Billings

It’s day 3! We begin with a fantastic road trip through Wyoming’s lands and fields and then saddle up for a visit to Sheridan’s cowboy town. We’ll enjoy a filling picnic lunch before hitting the road again and crossing into Montana, aka “Big Sky Country.”

Our next stop is Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument, the site of the legendary battle of 1876. Keep your camera ready!

Lastly, we reach Billings, a charming little town snuggled between the Rimrocks and Yellowstone River, where campers’ Clark and Lewis camped back in 1806.

Day 4: Yellowstone National Park (Part I)

On Day 4, we will keep cruising down the Yellowstone River. Thanks to the Lewis & Clark Trail, we’ll enjoy scenic views of Montana!

Next stop, we’ll have to watch out for moose, bears, and wolves as we explore the park’s 2-million-acre land. There are an average of three hundred geysers and more than ten thousand hot springs, mud pots, and fumaroles to check out! We will also go to Mammoth Hot Springs, where the elks run free. Don’t miss out on the terraced pools too!

Finally, we’ll hang out at the Old Faithful Basin for the next two nights. The best part? The Old Faithful Geyser is a short distance from your Old Faithful Inn and Snow Lodge. Every period of ninety minutes, it pours hundreds of gallons of hot water, making it a crowd-pleaser! Remember that the elevation of Old Faithful is around 7,300 feet.

Day 5: Yellowstone National Park (Part II)

We’re still in Yellowstone National Park (Part II) for the 5th day, and it’s time for the adventure to continue. Check out the one-of-a-kind Norris Geyser Basin, chill out at Fishing Bridge Visitor Center, and make sure to feast your eyes on Yellowstone’s Grand Canyon.

Trust us — you want to make sure to take advantage of the booming Yellowstone Falls, which are twice as tall as Niagara Falls! Then, we’ll head back to the hotel for leisure time and geyser gazing.

Day 6: From Grand Tetons, Jackson, to Pocatello, Idaho

It’s Day 6, and it’s time to check out Grand Teton National Park. With 12,000 ft .peaks, look at the jagged Teton Range. They’re the background of the movie “Shane”! Get your photos at Jenny Lake and carry them to Jackson, Wyoming.

You’ll have plenty of time to wander around their unique galleries and boutiques and admire the antler bridge at the Jackson town square entry. Feeling thirsty? Hop into the Million Dollar Cowboy Bar, where the bar stools are made of horse saddles!

Afterward, you’ll cruise into all-suite hotel digs in Pocatello, Idaho, to chill out. But beware! The altitude in Pocatello is about 4,462 ft — we don’t want you to be short of breath.

Day 7: Pocatello

Get your seat belts on – on Day 7, we’ll be continuing our trip through time! First, we’ll explore Pocatello and bring back memories of the emigrants who journeyed to the Old Oregon Trail. We’ll visit the Fort Hall Trading Post replica they once stocked their wagons before heading westward.

Next, we’ll venture into Salt Lake City, the capital of Utah. Our ride around the city will allow us to catch sight of the Capitol Building of the Utah State, and a quick stop-over at Temple Square is a must! These fountains and gardens are a paradise for visitors.

We’ll even check out the legendary home of the Tabernacle Choir of Mormons (except for unavailability due to religious ceremonies). Dinner wraps up this packed day 7!

Day 8: Return to Salt Lake City

Wrap up your tour with breakfast on Day 8 in Salt Lake City. After breakfast, catch your provided airport transfer and head home!

"Beyond description, and I’m an English teacher! We chose Caravan for our 50th anniversary celebration and could not have been more pleased. Incredible offerings and accommodations made for personal needs at each stop. Loved the sights and photo ops, a totally comfortable amount. Loved that we could watch beautiful and informative films if we so chose. Never felt tired, and we loved the mini-hikes. Our TD was truly extraordinary, the ✭ director of the year, and all museum guides and assistants were inspirational. We may consider another tour in the future (this was our first), it was such a positive experience."

Mr. R.B., Englewood, New Jersey

"Looking for a carefree vacation? Caravan takes care of everything. Logistics, including airport and baggage transfers, hotels, sightseeing and activities, and reservations for all the events. Long coach rides can be quite boring, right? Not so if you were fortunate enough to have booked the Caravan Yellowstone, Mount Rushmore and Grand Tetons tour in August this year. Our awesome driver guided us as we traversed 1250 miles of spectacular scenery for six days. Mother nature treated us to thrilling views; geysers, hot springs, abundant lodgepole pine trees, lakes, rivers and wildlife. Bring your camera so you can capture the significant milestones and awesome sights along the way. We were on watch for waterfowl, beaver, osprey, eagles, and big game elk, bison, and deer. The Grand Tetons provide a fantastic backdrop as you take it all in. And don’t worry if you slept through geography and social studies class in high school. Enter our director, a great storyteller with colorful speech and quick wit. Never dull, the daily excursions traveling through the west all rolled up into one incredible trip."

Mr. C.R., Chattanooga, Tennessee

"When I’m ready for another guided tour, Caravan would be a top choice. I was totally impressed with how organized everything was. So many great activities and sights: the hikes around the hot springs. Our tour director made the trip so fun, and our driver was excellent, always smiling, helpful and welcoming us aboard. Lots of rest and photo stops made our vacation enjoyable."

Mr. & Mrs. A.N., East Syracuse, New York

"Outstanding. I cannot emphasize enough how pleased we were to go on our 2nd trip with Caravan. This was equally, if not better, than our last trip to Yosemite. We had a great time, felt safe, and couldn’t have seen as much or learned as much if we went at it alone. We cannot say enough good things about your staff and our experience. They aced it. Our TD was an excellent animator and director delivering on what was promised and more. We enjoyed all the sights and guided tours, very well chosen. Relaxing, scenic and very memorable, we’d recommend it to anyone."

Mr. & Mrs. A.M., Abington, Pennsylvania

"This is my third Caravan tour and by far the best. I have highly recommended you to many people and show them your brochure. I was very happy with the provided activities and sights and especially liked our director’s narration about what we were seeing as it greatly enhanced our experience. I never had and probably never will have a finer tour director."

Mr. J.B., Mount Vernon, Ohio

"I am very happy that I took this tour through history, and happy with all we were able to see and do. We have a beautiful country right here and to be able to finally visit things and learn about them was an amazing experience. So many breathtaking moments along with a narrative by a professional; again, amazing. Even during longer drives, our director kept us informed about where we were and any important history that tied our tour together. He was an excellent tour director. Entertaining, he held my attention and his time management was impeccable. I was impressed with his concern for us and his preparedness; he was a pleasure to travel with for the seven days. Thank you."

Mrs. P.P., Lavallette, New Jersey

"Excellent trip in all aspects and a great value! Caravan took good care of me from the airport arrival to the airport departure. Yellowstone and Grand Tetons were beautiful. Loved the geysers and thermal activity, canyons, waterfalls, mountains and wildlife. Will certainly consider booking another Caravan adventure in the future."

Mr. L.R., Lebanon, Ohio
