Visiting Tikal: The Tikal Airport

Before visiting Tikal and its ancient ruins, you must determine the best arrival city. There isn’t a Tikal, Guatemala airport, so visitors must select a nearby airport to fly into before traveling to Tikal. Most travelers choose to fly into Flores, Guatemala, a nearby town, before traveling to Tikal to explore.

Our Guatemala, Tikal, and Rio Dulce tour brings you to Tikal, but instead of starting at the Flores airport, our travelers fly into Guatemala City.

Tikal Travel: Local Airports

When visiting Guatemala to explore Tikal National Park and its famous Mayan ruins, many travelers start in one of two places: Flores or Guatemala City. The former is the go-to starting point for travelers who solely want to visit Tikal, while the latter is a great jump-off point for travelers who wish to experience more of what Guatemala has to offer.

Flores

If Tikal is the focus of your Guatemalan adventure, you’ll probably start your trip at the Flores airport. This is the closest airport to Tikal National Park, home to the ancient Mayan ruins of Tikal. The city is located approximately 90 minutes away from Tikal.

Once you touch down the Flores runway, you’ll need to determine how you plan to travel to Tiokal. There are several local options, including taxis, minivans, and buses. Generally, taxis and minivans are waiting at the Flores airport to carry you to Tikal. However, this isn’t always consistent, so you may need to take a public bus or a private taxi to reach your destination.

Guatemala City

Travelers exploring Guatemala and all of its wonders may choose to start in Guatemala City. This city is a fair distance away from Tikal, requiring about an eight-hour bus ride if you go straight through. Given the distance, this starting point isn’t ideal for those who want to spend most of their time in Tikal.

With Caravan, Tikal is part of the tour. Our Guatemala, Tikal, and Rio Dulce tour takes you to various must-see stops in Guatemala, giving you a well-rounded and unforgettable experience.

The tour starts in Guatemala City, where you’ll fly in. In the following days, the tour whisks you around Guatemala, visiting the Popol and Ixchel Museums, enjoying the sparkling water of Lake Peten Itza, exploring the ruins of Tikal, perusing Flores Island, and taking an invigorating cruise up the Rio Dulce.

The tour is packed with entertaining activities and must-see sights while leaving plenty of time to explore Guatemala’s beauty independently. The best part? Our tours include hotels and meals, so you won’t need to stress about the little details!
